We have now passed the \'age of global competition\' and are entering the \'age of global cooperation\'. At its center stands the Republic of Korea. As to prove this, the G20 summits came to Seoul to exchange ideas for international economic cooperation such as in exchange rate policies, and now, global figures have come to Yeungnam University to search for ways for international cooperation in the solar energy sector. Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) proclaimed the start of the new age of global cooperation after making an agreement with establishing the GGECN (Global Green Energy Cluster Network) to connect Korea, US, France, Germany and Australia in the afternoon of the 16th at the Chunma Arts Center Chamber Hall. Lee, Hyo-soo, who was the keynote speaker, emphasized in his speech titled, \'GIFT plan & GGECN for Sustainable Green Growth\', that the entire world must come together to develop environment-friendly green energy in order to overcome the crisis of mankind caused by climate-change as soon as possible. In particular, he presented the three directions of \'development of new technologies for environment-friendly green energy\', \'energy saving technology development in existing industrial fields\', and \'innovation of energy saving consumption\' for the \'GIFT Plan\', and proposed international cooperation for the future of humankind. This also meant what the global cooperation network must aim for in the green energy sector as well. Institutes participating in the GGECN are core institutes that have already led the research and industries of the solar energy sector in their respective nations. In Korea, centering on Yeungnam University\'s Institute of Solar Energy Research, Solar Cell/Module Materials and Process Regional Innovation Center, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Economic Belt Green Energy Education & Research Center, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Gyeongbuk Technopark, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Leading Industry Development for Economic Region, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Energy Climate Change Center, as well as the foreign-invested company ISET (International Solar Electric Technology) will be participating. From the US are participating FESC (Florida Energy Systems Consortium), University Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics Research and Education at Georgia Tech, and CRSP (Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion). InESS (Institute of Electronics for Solids and Systems) of France, and TÜV Rheinland of Germany, and University of New South Wales of Australia join in the network. They have gathered at Yeungnam University to promise global cooperation in development of green energy for the future of humanity. They aimed at agreeing to make collaborative efforts for effective research and education in green energy sectors such as solar energy, hydro-energy, wind energy, geothermal heat, bio-mass, atomic energy, etc, and establishing sustainable development policies, while making representative communication channels from the respective countries. Accordingly, Yeungnam University and Gyeongsangbuk-do became not only the center for green energy in Korea, but debuted in the international stage as the center of global cooperation. Yeungnam University will play a role in connecting companies, institutes, research centers and universities of the domestic green energy sector with that of the US, France, Germany and Australia. In addition, it will play the role of brokering domestic consulting of world-renowned scholars in the green energy sector. As part of this, Yeungnam University is planning to drive the details of the private collaboration with InESS of France. InESS is a world-class green energy research institute located in Alsace, France, which has a sister-relationship with Gyeongsangbuk-do, and it is within the University of Strasbourg, which is also a sister-university of Yeungnam University. The US FESC, CRSP, UCEP, and Australia\'s UNSW also promised student exchange programs, joint research, and Shared-use of solar cell manufacturing pilot lines. FESC is the world\'s largest solar energy consortium that is combined with companies, colleges and research centers in the solar energy sector in Florida. CRSP is a consortium in Colorado with members such as the US NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) which is recognized as a world-class green energy research center. In addition, by the agreement which has also been made with Germany\'s TÜV Rheinland Yeungnam University will directly operate the world-class solar cell module international certification and evaluation center from 2011. Furthermore, it agreed to cooperate in attracting foreign investments with the US ISET to promote the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region\'s CIS thin film solar cell industry. Thus, through the establishment of the fusion research paradigm, Yeungnam University has got a green light for \'Green Innovation\', which is one of the \'Global Frontier 10-3-10\', which is the university\'s goal to become one of the top 10 universities in 3 research areas within 10 years. It has already prepared 88 billion won in national funding, and has constructed world-class partnerships now. At this summer school, which was offered to introduce Korea\'s culture, history, society and economy to the youth around the world, is being participated by 13 foreign students from the US, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Tanzania, Tunisia and China. They are busy learning about Korea for 7 hours a day, Monday through Friday beginning from the 28th of last month to the 25th of this month, focusing on the current affairs of the Korean society, tradition and culture of Korea, global economic issues, etc. After classes, the students participate in various extracurricular activities such as pottery, wearing hanbok, etiquette class, tea ceremony, natural dyeing, making kimchi, etc for hands-on experience of Korean traditional culture, and also visit historical sites such as Gyeongju and Jeonju to see and learn the history of Korea. What\'s more important to us is that we do our best so that we have no regrets and that we make friends with university students around the world. At the automobile engineering student festival, we\'ll have fun.\" On the morning of the 7th at the plant lab of Yeungnam University. The IUT team (photo) of the Isfahan University of Technology are working hard from early in the morning. After finally checking the vehicle that arrived late last night, they will be participate in the Baja SAE Korea at Yeungnam University that will be held from the afternoon on this day until the 10th. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_05400010076814252 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-31_09-50-09_495.jpg\" target=_blank> IUT is the KAIST of Iran. It is a university geared to the engineering sector and is located approximately 400km from the capital, Tehran. They decided to participate in the event after finding out that it would be held at Yeungnam University from the US SAE homepage last summer, but there were many obstacles to overcome. The biggest obstacle was the financial issue. Not to mention the cost to manufacture a vehicle, but the round trip airfares and cost to transport the vehicle were quite expensive. After soliciting a number of companies, they received financial support from the well-known Iranian oil refinery companies Nargan and North Drilling Company. The IUT team focused mainly on the suspension system for their vehicle. Because there is an offroad race, it absorbed shock from the road to minimize fatigue of the driver and controls irregular motion of the vehicle when driving on severely bumpy surfaces through increasing the tire grip for better control to enhance its driving power and braking power. Thus, they have strong confidence in the dynamic test that inspects the vehicle\'s braking power, traction power, control power, etc as well as in endurance race in which the track must be completed in 3 and a half hours. The team\'s leader Mortez (23) stated, \"It is not common for university students to receive support from a company in Iran to participate in an international event, so it was very difficult for us to find sponsors. But, after continuously persuading them without giving up they pledged their support to us beyond our expectation,\" and added, \"We will do our best until the end for those who trusted and supported us.\" Another hurdle to overcome was that they never experienced international competitions. The only experience is that their upperclassmen participated in an international competition five years ago in South Africa. Thus, for the past year the 6 mechanical engineering students, 1 industrial engineering student and 1 material engineering student came together as a team of pioneers and had to learn for theirselves and gain experience from A to Z. The \'Nets Go!\' campaign is a campaign to raise funds to send mosquito nets with killing insects to Africa in order to prevent malaria, which is the number 1 killer of children in Africa. This is the Korean version of the \'Nothing But Nets\' campaign of the US, which has been led for the past three years by the UN. The UN Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded with a 1 billion dollar donation by Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and vice-chairman of AOL Time Warner, to the UN, and globally prominent figures including Turner and Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary general are actively participating as members of the executive board. Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) held a launching ceremony of the 19th overseas volunteer groups at the main auditorium of the Law Library on the morning of the 30th. The competition was 4 to 1 for selection, and they will be dispatched to 14 nations around the world including Turkey, Armenia, Slovakia, Estonia, Ukraine, and Indonesia from early July. In particular, since it is a program jointly being pursued by Yeungnam University and international organizations such as UNESCO and IWO (International Workcamp Organization), it is a great opportunity to increase capacities as a global citizen. This is because young people from all over the world will come together and work and live together for about a month, and so it will offer the opportunity to overcome the racial, language, and cultural differences and be able to respect each other. Furthermore, it is also a great chance to naturally create a global human network with young people from around the world. Meanwhile, Professor Anderson, who is a distinguished professor in chemical engineering at the University of Florida, is also the supervisor of the \'Florida Energy Systems Consortium\', that is operated with a 60 billion won annual budget, and he also attended the solar ray conference at the Copenhagen Climate Summit Meeting in December as the representative for the US. Professor Rockett, who is the vice-dean of the materials engineering department at the University of Illinois, is also a key researcher who has studied solar cells and materials sectors for the past 36 years. He is operating a short-term educational course on the principles of thin film solar cells at the IEEE Solar Cell Specialists Society and US Materials Research Conference. He is also actively conducting research and educational activities by offering short-term educational programs on thin film solar cells and solar cell modeling in China, Mexico, Sweden, Israel and Brazil. Recently, he became the first winner of the \'Moheon Bio-Pharmacy Young Scientists Awards\'. The \'Moheon Bio-Pharmacy Young Scientists Awards\' is an award made at the personal expense of honorary professor Lee, Seung-gi, who retired from the Seoul National University College of Pharmacy, to foster young scientists. The award is granted to young scientists in graduate school or post-doc researchers who have published an outstanding thesis. Dr. Thapa received the honors at the awarding ceremony at the 20th anniversary symposium of the Bio-Pharmacy Research Association on the 16th. Dr. Thapa, who studied at the national Tribhuvan University (Kathmandu), which is Nepal\'s best university, enrolled at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy PhD program in September 2006. Prior to coming to study abroad, he had a managerial position at the brand development department of a beer company in Nepal, and rather than taking a high salary and stable lifestyle, he chose to become a researcher. And by the time he received his PhD in December 2009, he published over 10 theses in SCI and SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) level international journals on research of colon cancer. This resulted in him being hired as a research professor at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy in March and also winning the Young Scientists Awards. He is currently studying vascularization in the cancer cell metastasis process, and his dream spend his life researching the bio-pharmacy sector. However, he is planning to suspend his research temporarily next month and return to his home country. He is going to wed his fiance who has stood by his side waiting for the past 4 years. This time they are Lee, Ji-hye (23), who is in her first year in her master\'s degree course and Park, Jeong-heun (22), who is a senior in her undergraduate course. This suggested a new direction on existing research that focused on lowering the overall value of cholesterol, and it was recognized for its value in the international society through the publication of the thesis. Park, Jeong-heun, who will begin her master\'s degree course next semester will also participate in the HDL Research Conference to be held in Reus, Spain in September and is planning to present the research results of the aging-suppression tests that she is currently working on. Thus, Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun\'s research lab has continued its tradition of \'undergraduate student SCI thesis publication\'. This first started in December 2008. At the time, Park, Gi-hoon (25, the 3rd master\'s and doctorate\'s combined program), who was at the time a senior, became the first to discover that proteins extracted from Hyphantria cunea could be transformed using bio-engineering technologies to treat atherosclerosis, and published his paper in the Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, which was the second most authoritative international journal in the related sector. Furthermore, it was an issue because the main author of the paper was an undergraduate student. Also in the past January, Jang, Wook-joo (21), a junior, became the first in the world to clarify the aging-promotion mechanism of fructose and was listed as the first author in the SCI listed journal called Biochemical Biophysical Research Communication. Moreover, the research results were used to apply for a patent on the development of a treatment for suppressing metabolic syndromes such as aging-suppression and diabetes/arteriosclerosis, which is a rare achievement for an undergraduate student. This was achieved through the \'undergraduate research program (URP)\' support of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity, and after completing the project, Choi was also selected as the best S-level student in the analysis. This resulted in receiving the presidential award bestowed to \'Y-type Talents\' at the Yeungnam University 63rd Anniversary. Such achievements are the results of passing down the passion for academic exploration by seniors to juniors. Jang, Wook-joo and Park Jeong-heun could be recognized internationally for their research achievements despite the fact that they were undergraduates because Park, Gi-hoo and Lee, Ji-hye become their the role models.
