Development of an AI model for possible analysis of students’ concentration and understanding levels in online lectures for the students of faculty and graduate school of Department of Education Proposal of AI utilization method was praised in descriptive evaluation. Received gold award and excellence award in “AI leaning data hackathon” [February 15, 2022] <From the left, JOO Jeong-hun (Department of Education) and PARK Kang-yoon and KIM Kil-jae (master course of graduate school)> “What role will AI be able to play in smart education environment?” “AI utilization method” in the area of teaching/learning method proposed by YU students (President CHOI Oe-chool) attracts attention. PARK Kang-yoon (3rd grade of master course, Department of Education, graduate school), JOO Jeong-hun (3rd grade of Department of Education), and KIM Kyu-ri (3rd grade of Department of Visual Design) developed an AI model to identify understanding and concentration levels of students in online lectures. They developed an AI eye-tracing model based on eyeball data and developed indexes of fixation point data collecting, understanding, and concentrating levels. JOO Jeong-hun said, “The developed model may help teachers to identify concentration and understanding levels of students in the lessons using online lectures. It may be used as a solution for learning deficiency issues that occur in online education.” Recently, online education has become a topic due to prolonged expansion of COVID-19. With rapidly increased demand for intact online education, various types of learning deficiency occurs and it attracts attention as a supplementary measure for students who are demanders of education. The idea received gold award in “2021 Eyeball movement video AI learning data hackathon” held by Ministry of Information & Communication and National Information Society Agency. Also, PARK Kang-yoon and KIM Kil-jae (1st grade of master curse of graduate school) accessed to AI utilization method in the viewpoint of education evaluation. They took attention in recent situation that expansion of descriptive and essay-type evaluation systems have become an issue, developed AI similar with the level of human graders, and proposed an AI model to reduce burden of work of teachers in case of descriptive evaluation. KIM Kil-jae said, “It is inefficient to evaluate the essays of all students through human due to consumption of huge costs and time. The constructed AI evaluation model will help teachers to enhance efficiency of education.” The AI model constructed by them received excellence award in “essay data AI lessening data hackathon” held last year. PARK Kang-yoon who was included in the winner lists of two contests due to creative ideas commented, “I think that diverse challenges to use AI will make a foundation for construction of smart education environment and virtuous cycle of data in future. I am conducting in-depth researches on the method to enhance quality of education using diverse deep learning and machine running algorithms.”

Support with 70,000 Euro by international automobile illumination expert group under UN - International acceptance of research power Research on evaluation of safety of automobile direction projection lamps Will head international research on vehicle illumination performance evaluation and provide empirical basis for establishment of international legislation [February 18, 2022] Professor LEE Chan-soo of Department of Electronic Engineering of YU will conduct an international research with the support by GTB (Groupe de Travail Bruxelles, The International Automotive Lighting and Light Signalling Expert Group) which is international automobile illumination expert group under UN Especially, Professor LEE Chan-soo attracted more attention because his world-level research power was accepted with a GTB research project for the first time in Asia. In past, GTB research services were mostly conducted by colleges or institutions in Europe or North America. The professor’s research team will conduct a research on “Signal light projections with direction indicator.” The research project will be conducted by July this year with 70,000 Euro (about KRW 95 million) of research budget. Professor Lee described his research plan, “As floor guide lamps linked with automobile direction indicators provide additional information on direction in various dynamic environments where automobiles are operated, it will be verified whether such guide lamps distributed on the floors of various automobiles will help the traffic weak such as walkers and bicycle riders or cause issues.” The research team plans to construct virtual environment such as crossroads and T-shape intersections and to conduct virtual environment tests using HMD (Head Mounted Display), to perform detailed verification through road running simulators of Korea Expressway Corporation, and to perform verification based on actual vehicles in K-city (a self-driving test city) of Korea Automobile Testing&Research Institute (KATRI) of Korea Transportation Safety Authority. Professor Lee expected, “The result of this research will provide empirical basis for Automobile sub-committee under the European Economic Commission of the United Nations (UNECE/WP29) to establish legislation on projection base lamps such as turn signal guide lamps. It will be the base for development of communication lamps and scenarios related with not only lamp performance evaluation but also self-driving vehicles in future.” The GTB research project is the result of international acceptance of government-supported projects and industry-academy cooperative researches conducted by him until now. Professor Lee operated Automobile illumination fusion expert cultivation team with the support by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy from 2015 to 2020 and is leading a world level research team specified in automobile illumination. The research team has conducted basic and applied researches on automobile illumination to enhance visibility and safety of drivers in bad weather environment and on night roads using weather environment test beds. He attracts attention with presentation of research results in famous international academic meetings and GTB expert meetings including International Symposium on Automotive Lighting (ISAL) and International Congress: SIA VISION, etc. Also, he is continuously conducting industry-academy cooperative researches including evaluation of safety of guide lamps and evaluation of visibility in climate/environment with professional automobile component enterprises including SL Corporation.

IT’S is an academic club consisting of more than 120 faculty students. They won the first prize in Marine/Fishery Big Data Analysis Contest last year and their capability was accepted by showing their creative idea in Gyeongsangbukdo Data Analysis Contest, Daegu Big Data Analysis Contest, Marine Police Data Contest Exhibit, and Firefighting Safety Big Data Contest, etc. Chair LEE Bin (3rd grade) of IT’S which won six contest exhibits last year said, “Various issues may be solved and improvements may be deduced using big data generated in daily life. We are proud of the possibility that the ideas studied and suggested by us may help the policies of public agencies and decision-making of companies.” IT’S won in contest exhibits of AI including 9th Embedded Software Contest, SK AI Challenge for Our Society Contest Exhibit, ‘KB AI Challenge, etc., and the professionalism is accepted. They gathered attentions of participants by suggesting differentiated ideas such as Tooth brushing habit analysis system, Clothes tailoring and recommending system based on deep learning, and A model to detect wearing of safety devices to prevent marine safety accidents. Among them, Standard tooth brushing technology won excellence award in Embedded Software Contest and got rave reviews from the judges. The technology is an analysis and improvement system for tooth brushing habit based on deep learning. BAE Seung-ho (3rd grade, YU Department of Information and Communication Engineering) was in charge of implementation of AI of the technology and said, “It is possible to collect tooth brushing habits from vision sensors installed on the mirror in a bathroom and to analyze tooth brushing habit based on the joint and moving direction of a hand using LSTM of deep learning model. Also, insufficient tooth brushing parts may be visualized through a web service for checking by the user on a smartphone or PC. The value in health such as prevention of periodontal diseases may be enhanced if studies are additionally conducted in connection with medical area.” Especially, the thesis reported based on the Standard tooth brushing technology by the students of YU Department of Information and Communication Engineering was selected as an excellent thesis in “2021 Korean Embedded Engineering Autumn Conference” and both academic value and industrial value were accepted.
